Filipino designer Vito Selma has created the Paisley Chair.Everything about the Paisley, from its material, erganomics, comfort and shape is inspired from a woman’s curves. When one sits down, it is about giving the feeling of coming home, an embrace from of ones mother, friend or lover. You meet. You get comfortable. You fall in love.

The thin stainless steel legs is to give an illusion and feeling of floating. The back of the chair in made of Philippine Abaca fiber turned into rope and then into thousand of loops to create a unique texture. Each loop is intricately hand sown into the chair. This Abaca back can come in natural or a naturally dyed version in a huge variety of colors. The Pink Paisley in the photo was created specially in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

Doeloe Lounge Chair and Pretzel Bench by Abie Abdillah

Living in a city that’s already crowded and hectic, makes me often suprised seeing new buildings, apartments, and malls were still built rapidly these days in Jakarta. This condition makes me wonder how it felt to live in Jakarta in the 1970?s, when there are still many green places spread along the city.

From an eager to live on a time that I never felt, I want to create a furniture that took a piece of shape that could resemble that time. And this is why “doeloe lounge chair” was created.Doeloe (read: dulu) means a time that has passed. Inspired by a design of “Oplet” (modified from Morris or Austin van designs), public transportation vehicles that used in Jakarta on 1930?s to 1979. Using rattan materials, which are consider as a classic material, “doeloe” was mean’t to represent my feelings to live on a time that I wish I could had.

Rattan is a unique material that mainly came from South East Asia, especially from Indonesia which was claimed 70% of worldwide needs for rattan materials are from the country own resources. Why does rattan unique? Rattan as a plant could grow more than 100 meters long and have 400 various kind of species which about only 8% of them are already explored  and used as raw material for human needs products.The other uniqueness of Rattan are the characteristics  of the material itself, which are strong, and able to be bend. But yet, it was tricky to create a piece of furniture from rattan materials, since the stretchy characters make them need to have various braces support to keep the furniture strong and  steady.And to create a piece of furniture from modular shapes that came from continuous lines of rattan materials, is my attention when create the “Pretzel Bench”. The pretzel shape was taken because it had a continuous line shapes and looped as a rope tie. “Pretzel Bench” was meant to show the most unique of rattan material characteristics, which is the “stretchy and able to be bend” character.

A three dimensional model of the sofa is created with a computer program. The model consists of three curved faces which can be virtually unfolded. Next, these faces are manufactured from steel plates with a laser cutting process. The plates are bent and welded together to obtain the final shape of the sofa. All functionalities of the sofa are created from one continuous line.

The Plooop Chair by Timothy Schreiber has officially launched at the Stockholm Furniture Fair this week. By applying CNC-assisted cutting along with advanced traditional craftsmanship he creates a work of seamless quality with a contemporary edge. I love how the plywood separates where the arms meet the back, yet the harmony of the design is continuous.

Says the designer, “The continuous plywood rings touch and detach at key points, melding the chair’s structural elements in one fluid motion and creating an elegant and harmonious form.”

Scene XXL Chair by Gijs Papavoine for Montis

A modular seating system of squares and rectangles. A large seat stands lightly on thin metal legs. Scene is compact and relatively high. Slender backrests fold around the seating element, as a raised collar. They can be ordered with the backs next to each other or diagonally facing each other in different configurations. Because the round backs are folded around the seating elements, one person can sit in different positions without having to move anything. Its high compact seat, its elegant curvaceous backs and cushions make the Scene a lively display in big or small spaces. Scene is very suitable for lobbies, waiting and living rooms.

New York-based designer Li-Rong Liao has created the Folded Table and Pendant Light.
Folded Felt Table and Pendant Light are a result of Li-Rong’s experiments with different folding profiles to find a balance between structure and aesthetics. With mathematical formula, Liao is able to apply the folding concept in a large range of design aspects including furniture, fashion, and medical devices. The table is folded in one sheet of cardboard with a layer of felt finishing.

Henry Stool by Alexandre Reignier

Elegant in its simplicity, but intricate in its composition, the Henri Stool by Alexandre Reignier is one of those small pieces that can really set of a room.

The French furniture designer employed a white lacquered base molded smoothly from a thin sheet of aluminum, topped with subtly curved bands of ash tree for a seat. Each bowed dowel has a softness that’s translated through the bleached natural color of the wood, and the crescent form to which it has been cut. Creating an image of comfort, the perch sits atop its sturdy base which promises stability beneath the sitter.

 

One hundred of the Henri Stool by Alexandre Reignier have been manufactured, each signed by the artist. This piece is a magnificent movable that is also a decorative masterpiece.

Ko Table by In Element Designs

Ko table was created in the image of a Canadian forest. It feels as if you are sitting in a forest looking at branches in a lake. Because each piece of furniture is carefully carved by hand, none of them are exactly the same.

 Ko called the Table is a table designed by Vancouver, Canada-based In Elements Design. This table was created by describing the Canadian forest.When viewing this table as if you were the resource persons sitting in the woods to see the branch in the lake. Because every piece of furniture carefully carved by hand, none of them are exactly alike. The foot part of the table has a unique structure that are not on the table normally. Wrap transparent glass serves as a place to put the coffee or food.

The Bro Chair and Stool by Scott Lee Hae Seung

At the initial stage of designing ‘Bro’ chair, I was looking for new type of detailing to go with lamination bending. Of course from the manufacturing process, laminated wood itself has beautiful authentic details. Since the invention of the wood lamination bending technique with the traditional detail kept as a common rule, I was trying to look for a well-matched detail in current visual era. The chamfered edge (normally not done for laminated wood, but done in solid wood furniture) and applied a stripe of contrasting color to give it a graphical thin-edge-effect on the chair.

The Woven Series by Timothy John

An interest in creating texture through weaving is also a key component in the series. Industrial synthetic felt, intended for lining nautical vessels is cut and sewn into strips then woven around the steel framework to form a unique covering.Creating the Genius first inspired the making of a second piece in which the steel wire frame is semi-exposed. The Mastermind is essentially the Genius, partially deconstructed, showcasing just how beautiful the body under all its layers can be. The Deviant clock exhibits these very same materials and techniques, applied to a large Grandfather clock form, putting a twist on tradition.The series provokes thought and emotion. Viewers cannot help but reach out to touch and interact with each piece.

The K-Chair & K-Plus by Helle Damkjær for Kitani

Japanese furniture company Kitani has collaborated with Paris-based Danish-born designer Helle Damkjær to produce ‘k-chair’ and ‘k-plus’, an arm chair and ottoman set on show at the 2011 Stockholm Furniture fair.

 

Helle Damkjær has designed the K-Chair & K-Plus foot stool for Japanese manufacturer Kitani.

FAVN Sofa by Jaime Hayon for Fritz Hansen

Jaime Hayon has designed the FAVN sofa for the Danish furniture manufacturer Fritz Hansen.

FAVN; the Danish name for embrace, is a new sofa designed by Jaime Hayon for Fritz Hansen. The new sofa is the result of a creative dialogue and will be launched during the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2011 at Republic of Fritz Hansen’s showroom in Milan.“I wanted the sofa to be based on a shell. A shell being hard on the outside, soft and welcoming on the inside.” Says Jaime Hayón. “I wanted to create a form that embraces you, something really organic – that’s why we named it FAVN.” Hayón continues.Recognized by his fresh, colourful and extrovert design style, the award winning artist-designer is the most recent addition to Fritz Hansen’s family tree of designers.
